Romanian League in Defense of Animals (ROLDA) is an internationally supported nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating animal suffering, primarily in Romania and Ukraine.
Our mission is to create a world free from unwanted, neglected, or abused animals by tackling the root causes of pet abandonment, providing rescue, shelter, and rehabilitation, and supporting responsible pet ownership in impoverished communities.
ROLDA exists to give hope to neglected, abused animals, and the people who care about them.
What We Do • Operate two no-kill dog shelters and a shelter for senior/disabled cats. • Rescue, treat, rehabilitate, and re-home animals - close to 100,000 helped to date. • Provide veterinary care, spaying/neutering, and education. • Support impoverished pet owners with emergency aid and food. • Extend humanitarian relief and animal rescue to conflict zones in Ukraine
ROLDA's Core Beliefs • Animals enrich our lives and possess emotions, memories, and rights. • Every animal deserves a life free from suffering. • Human actions and decisions impact the wellbeing of animals. • We must be guardians of the natural world, sharing responsibility for its creatures.
How ROLDA Embodies Sustainability Humane population control (sterilization) actively curbs the stray crisis, reducing suffering and environmental pressures. Disaster response (e.g., floods in Galați) links animal welfare to climate adaptation and resilient communities. Food aid, veterinary support, and adoption programs build healthier, more equitable human and animal populations. Education campaigns foster responsible pet ownership and stewardship of local biodiversity.
ESG at ROLDA Environmental: Fights ecosystem degradation by reducing stray populations and supporting humane land use. Social: Acts as a safety net for animals and vulnerable people, upholding compassion, justice, and dignity. Governance: Transparent operations, ethical use of donations, measurable impact, and community-driven decision-making.
In 2026, ROLDA will proudly celebrate its 20th anniversary as a dedicated animal welfare charity. Over two decades, we’ve gone beyond the milestone of helping more than 100,000 animals and supporting 50 different rescuers across Romania, Ukraine, Turkey, and Bulgaria. This achievement marks only the beginning of our expanding mission to provide life-saving aid and advocacy for vulnerable animals throughout the region.
